SAF and Manchester United!

By Toyin | May 16, 2009

‘I want to knock them off their perch’! That was Sir Alex Ferguson’s (SAF for short) target when he was appointed as Manchester United manager 22 years ago and he was referring to Liverpool’s enviable position as England’s most successful football club.

As ambitious and ridiculous as that statement was all those years ago, the reality is that it has come to pass and in such exciting manner. Like a friend says anytime we have an argument, ‘one thing normally leads to another’ and for SAF; one title normally leads to another!

Today, he won his eleventh Premiership title to equal Liverpool’s 18 in total. More compelling is the fact that out of the 17 titles contested since the English Premier League was formed in 1992, Manchester United under SAF has won 11; amazing!

As they celebrate yet another title today, the Club must be proud of their manager who has not been afraid to take risks, spend big money on big players, drive out non performers, stake his claim at all times and built great teams over and over again. In the course of all this, he’s won 26 major trophies for the club and justified his rightful position as one of the most successful football coaches in the world.

Having been with Manchester United for almost 23 years now, he expressed his readiness to continue to do what he does best as long as his health permits. He went on to say that having equaled Liverpool’s record at least in English titles, he’s more than determined to go one better and indeed fulfill the famous words he uttered almost a quarter of a century ago. This is the attitude of the man who has perfected the Art of Winning and succeeded in planting the winning mentality in all his teams over the years.

From the likes of Brian Robson to Mark Hughes to Eric Cantona to Roy Keane to Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes,Garry Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, the man, SAF, keeps bringing up leaders on the pitch and turning them into men in real life. Watching the players with their children and families on the pitch is a testimony to the great work the man is doing at Old Trafford. Having him as a manager has surely improved the lot of the players not only in financial and silverware terms but also in the most critical area of life; family.

We at 9jafans.com join millions of Manchester United fans all over the world to congratulate the players (who are the main actors) and of course the man himself, Sir Alex Ferguson for another golden moment in the history of the club. For all other clubs who are hoping to dislodge this man and his team, the work, I strongly believe is only going to get tougher. From the look of things and the strength of the club, they might just be around for many years to come. And what’s more, if their manager stays fit; the party may just be getting started!

Those who are criticising arsene wenger for not wining trophies should know that Thomas Edison tried a thousand times to invent a bulb , Abraham Lincoln contested different political offices eight times and failed , eventually he became the president of America. It is no big deal if Arsene Wenger tried to win trophies with young players who will be useful in years to come .He has one of the best youth sides in club football. Afterall it is the end that justify the means
